© Warner Bros With a career as rich and prolific as Donald Sutherland's, it's remarkable that he never received an Oscar nomination. The fact that he didn't would suggest Hollywood never really quite knew how to fully embrace an actor who revelled in quirky roles and built a career inside and outside the studio system. During a diverse career spanning seven decades, the Canadian was honoured by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He received an honorary award for his work in 2017 but while a retrospective award for a lifetime achievement is a fitting honour, it isn't quite the same as having a specific performance recognised by your peers.
